“How to Improve Your Ranking”
What is the most important thing your site needs for better Google ranking? This is the ever elusive question that everyone wants to know. Based on my research and experience I can say that there are two factors that affect this.
First is PageRank, this is Google’s way of numerically assigning how popular a site is. There is a complicated formula to determine PR, but it boils down to this. The more external links you have to your site the higher your PR will be. Each link counts as a vote for your site, the more votes the higher the PR.
Because of this, it is important to concentrate on building as many quality links pointing to your site as possible. I have detailed in other post some good techniques to get this done. One often overlooked technique is to have all of your pages pointing to each other on your site.
The PR of the site pointing to you and the relevance of their content related to yours is important. But even a link on a PR 0 site, with nothing to do with your content will help, maybe not much but every little bit helps. There is a common belief that these can hurt you. If that were the case, all you would have to do is start placing links to the competition on non related low PR sites, this would lower your competitions rank and help you.
PageRank is not everything though, I have seen lower ranking pages come back above a higher ranking page. This leads me to the next point, be careful who you are linking to.
One way that links could hurt you is who you are linking to. If you are linked to a site that has been banned by Google, you will be penalized. Linking out to other sites is a part of building your links. Exchanging links is a good practice in that it can help you build traffic and get noticed by the search engines. The important thing to do is keep monitoring your linking partners to make sure that you aren’t going to suffer from posting to them. So keep building those links to your site and your page rank will improve, keep an eye on the sites you post to and you won’t have any trouble.
